What is the history of  the We Are Girls – Houston Conference?

WAG Houston 2015 Group

In 2008, GEN hosted its first annual, statewide We Are Girls Conference in Austin, Texas at the Anne Richards School for Young Women, an all girls public school in the Austin Independent School District. The conference successfully grew and eventually moved into one of Austin’s largest high schools, allowing the event capacity to reach 2,000 participants in 2015.

In 2012, the Principal of the Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy (the Houston sister school to the Anne Richards School) visited the conference and requested GEN consider hosting the same event at their school in Houston. With only grassroots marketing and outreach to schools in Houston and surrounding areas, GEN set a goal of 400 registrants, and quickly surpassed that reaching 800 attendees in November of 2015. Emceed by Telemundo Houston with the highest marks from attendees, the enormous success proved the Houston community is looking for an event like the We Are Girls Conference.

In 2017, we brought the conference to Hogg Middle School in partnership with Principal Angela Sugarek, and with the help of her incredible team, we reached 1,600 participants.
